Elwha Hat

Last year, I decided I wanted to make my husband a hat for Christmas, a simple, thoughtful project that I knew he’d actually use. So, I headed to the yarn store and picked up Malabrigo Vientos in the color Black Forest. Now, why I chose black yarn… I truly couldn’t tell you. But the moment I felt it, I was sold. It’s incredibly soft and squishy, and since it’s superwash merino, I didn’t have to worry about it felting if it ever ended up in the wash (because let’s be honest, that will happen at some point).

My husband works outside in the cold, so a warm, well-made hat felt like the perfect gift. Of course, life happened, and I didn’t actually get around to knitting it until February, but honestly, that didn’t matter. He loves anything I make him, and this was no exception.

The Pattern is the Elwina hat by Attic Yarns, and it was such a joy to knit. The pattern is straightforward and works up quickly, which is always a win. One of my favorite details is how the ribbing flows seamlessly into the rest of the design, it just makes the whole piece feel cohesive and intentional. It was one of those projects that felt satisfying from start to finish.

And the best part? He loves it. Even now, as the nights start to get warmer, he still reaches for that hat.

This project also marked my first time using ChiaoGoo Shorties (the 4-inch set) with the swivel cords, and I have to say, it might have been the best knitting experience I’ve ever had. The needles felt amazing in my hands, the cords didn’t fight me, and everything just worked so smoothly. I was so impressed that I immediately went back and picked up multiple sizes for future projects.

I already know I’ll be making one for myself soon, so stay tuned for that one!
